The "Sixth Exhibition of Film and Gastronomy" ran parallel to Navarra Gourmet and, as in previous years, was warmly received by the public. The films screened at Cine Carlos III at eight o'clock in the evening were ‘Dieta mediterránea’ (2009), ‘Estómago’ (2008), and ‘El pollo, el pez y el cangrejo real’ (2008), As usual, they were presented by well-known specialists in the field, the film director Helena Taberna and the chef Josean Martínez Alija from Bilbao's Guggenheim restaurant.
Gastronomy has become an increasingly popular field over recent years. Our major chefs have become artists and alchemists of a trade in the full swing of creative expansion, they have a reverential aura and their kitchens, converted into laboratories, are the constant object of media attention. There are more and more television cookery programmes and theme channels, new restaurants are being opened under new names, the market is full of exotic and ecological products, wine tourism is booming, there are more and more cookery schools, culinary competitions… Before, good food meant getting rid of your hunger, now it has become a sublime experience in which the chef's ingenuity and imagination raise the souls of diners.
Within this panorama, no few books have been published and no few films produced on the subject. Each year, numerous films centre their scripts on gastronomy. Several people meeting around a generous table is the ideal dramatic resource not only to discuss stews and aromas, but also love, dreams, loneliness, disappointment, worries and yearnings, micro-cosmoses which, by extension, stand as allegories of what is known as the human condition.
Since 2002, Pamplona's "Cine Club Lux" has organised six "Exhibitions of Film and Gastronomy" in an attempt at uniting both the wonders of good food and film lovers. This pioneering event, which first saw the light of day in Pamplona, has spread to other fields, both in Spain and abroad. A good example of this is the Berlin Film Festival, in which the "Culinary Section" has now been running for three years, combining the screening of films on the subject with dishes inspired by the stories shown for the audience attending to try.
Bon appétit!
