For the third consecutive year, the Ciudad Agroalimentaria de Tudela awarded the Gold Medal for Quality to the best product made in Spain. It went to Bacalao (cod) al pil-pil by Bacalao Giraldo S. L., from Legutiano (Álava).
In the final round, this product prevailed over Trout roe by Cal&Ter from the Piscifactoria Industrial el Zarzalejo, in El Jardín (Albacete), Iberian pork croquettes by Ameztoi Anaiak, from Zestoa (Guipœzcoa); Potato purée by Yemas de Santa Teresa, from Las Rozas (Madrid), and Castilian stew "Señorío del Campo" by Legumer Precocinados, from Pajares de la Laguna (Salamanca).
A total of 38 companies from throughout Spain took part, with 65 pre-prepared dishes. The aim of the prize is to publicise and promote the quality of Spanish products.
The jury which tasted the products consisted of Rafael García Santos (the technical director of the Congress), food critics, representatives from the Navarrese Gastronomy Academy, EVENA (Navarra's Viticulture and Oenology Centre) and Asociación Gastera.
Meanwhile, Prado de Chica Selección especial 2004 produced by Bodegas Urabain, Allo, won the Gold Medal for Quality for the best Navarra wine.
The eleven runners-up were Pago de Cirsus Cuvée Especial 2004 (Bodegas Iñaki Núñez, S.L.), Alzania 21 del 10, 2005 (Bodegas y Viñedos Alzania, S.L.), Odipus Negro 2007 (Crianzas y Viñedos R. Reverte, S.L.), Finca la Cantera de Santa Ana 2006 (Bodegas García Burgos, S.L.), Altos de Inurrieta 2005 (Inurrieta, S.L.), Aroa Jauna 2005 (Bodegas Aroa), Señorío de Sarría Viñedos Nº 7, 2005 (Bodega de Sarría, S.A.), Pago de Larrainzar, 2005 (Bodegas Pago de Larrainzar, S.L.), Seis de Azul y Garanza 2007 (Azul y Garanza Bodegas, S.L.), Coop.) and Chivite Colección 125 Reserva 2004 (Bodegas Julián Chivite, S.L.).
In this third year, the Ciudad Agroalimentaria de Tudela also announced special prizes for the best Navarrese products.
The winning products were: Cristal peppers and ceps in oil by Conservas Artesanas El Navarrico, Virgin olive oil from Navarra by La Maja, Chistorra sausage by Embutidos Arbizu, Batiku of junket by Postres Tradicionales de Ultzama, Rice pudding by Lácteos Goshua, Tudela artichokes and Piquillo peppers from Lodosa by Conservas Artesanas Pedro Luis, Brioche with goose foie gras and fig chutney by M. Etxenike, Asparagus from Navarra and Piquillo peppers from Lodosa by Conservas Dantza, Asparagus from Navarra by Conservas Cambra, Roncal cheese by Quesos Larra, Duck confit by Martiko, "Pocha" beans by Conservas D. Marco and Idiazábal cheese by Quesos Ricardo Remiro.
The chef Martín Berasategui; Pilar García Granero, Chairwoman of the Regulating Council of D. O. Vinos de Navarra; Begoña Sanzberro, the Government of Navarra's Autonomous Community Minister of Rural Development and the Environment, José Javier González Oliver, from Bacalao Giraldo, and Ramón Tejadas, from Iberdrola.
